Suspect of alleged murder of 13-year-old girl in Pamtsho arrested

In the latest development of the alleged murder of a 13-year-old girl in Pamtsho area, the police have detained a 26 year old man. According to police, the man confessed to murdering the girl. The man was apprehended at Ramthangka in Paro yesterday. The police were able to arrest the suspect through CCTV footages.

Construction of integrated check posts in 13th Five-Year-Plan costing Nu 300 M

Bhutan will soon allow foreign tourists to enter the country through Samdrup Jongkhar via the Daranga checkpost in Assam. The Indian government has approved the identification of the gate as a foreigners' checkpost. The Foreign Affairs and External Minister, DN Dhungyel, shared this yesterday during the fourth Meet the Press session. The minister said that work is ongoing and a final decision has yet to be made. Meanwhile, the Samdrup Jongkhar border gate will be converted into an Integrated Check Post within the 13th Five-Year Plan. Cardamom plants drying up due to excessive heat and less rainfall

Cardamom plants in Bartsha-Namgyalgang Chiwog of Kana Gewog in Dagana are dying, leaving the farmers worried. The residents of the chiwog grow cardamom as the main cash crop. They say less or erratic rainfall this year is affecting the growth of cardamom plants adding that this is the first time the cardamom plants experienced such unfavorable weather for growth.  

Thousands of devotees gather to receive Rinchen Terzoe Jaglung in Paro

Close to 15,000 devotees from across the country and pilgrims from neighbouring countries gathered at the Ugyen Pema Woeling Zangdo Pelri in Bondey, Paro for the Rinchen Terzoe Jaglung. The three-and-a-half-month-long empowerment and oral transmission is being presided over by Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche. The initiation began today.

Household plastic waste management advocacy for women and youth

A survey in Thimphu Thromde and Kawang Gewog found that women manage about 75 per cent of household waste. To encourage positive behavioural change for the future, the Bhutan Ecological Society and the Gross International Nature are training women and youth in Thimphu Thromde on identifying and segregating plastic waste for proper disposal. The advocacy aims to train 1,000 women and 500 youths.

Boulder exports from Gelephu to Bangladesh not benefitting Bhutanese truckers

Boulder exports from Gelephu to Bangladesh have been thriving in the past couple of years. Despite hundreds of tonnes of boulders leaving Gelephu daily for Bangladesh, the business has not benefited Bhutanese truck drivers. Exporters claim that huge transportation expenses incurred along the Indian highways on the way to Bangladesh discourage Bhutanese truck drivers.

Bhutanese wildlife biologist wins Whitley Award for his efforts to save Gee’s golden langur

Kuenzang Dorji, a wildlife biologist at the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, has received the prestigious Whitley Award in London for safeguarding the endangered Gee’s golden langur and addressing human-wildlife conflict. He is among the seven conservationists selected from more than a hundred applications worldwide this year. The award, often referred to as ‘Green Oscars’ was presented yesterday with each winner receiving £ 50,000 to expand their conservation efforts globally. 

87 and going strong, Dengo relives his heydays

At 87 years old, age is just a number for Dengo from Paro, who participated as the oldest archer in the ongoing Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Memorial National Archery Tournament. Not only is he the oldest participant, but his team also comprised of elderly men all above 60 years of age.
